Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon (24) was shown a straight red card today—25 August 2025—during the Premier League match against Liverpool at St James' Park. Referee Simon Hooper initially brandished a yellow for Gordon’s aggressive late sliding challenge on Virgil van Dijk, but after a VAR review, he upgraded it to a red for serious foul play, noting that the tackle made clear and forceful contact with the Liverpool captain’s calf.
