Cole Palmer - groin

Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer (23) is out of tonight's game due to an injury suffered in the warm-up (Sky Sports)

🎙️| Enzo Maresca: ‘Cole in the last four or five days was not one hundred per cent,’.... Today he tried in the warm-up, but he felt something, so we preferred not to take any risks and make it worse, and we will see in the next hours if it’s something important or not.

‘It’s a groin problem. It’s already the Palace game he was not one hundred per cent for, but he has tried to make a big effort for the club, for the team, for the fans, because he is really keen about the team. Tonight he tried again but it was not very good.’

Update Friday 12 September 2025

Enzo Maresca says a decision as to whether Cole Palmer is fit to face Brentford will be made after this afternoon's training session at Cobham.

🎙️| Enzo Maresca: ¨Cole took part in a session yesterday for the first time – but not the entire session. Today in the afternoon, we have one more session, and we are going to try with him and see if he is ok. Otherwise, he will be out tomorrow again¨.... ¨He had an injury, but he has recovered from the injury. So it wasn't about managing him; it was him recovering from the injury. From the moment he is available, we have to think about how to manage him a little bit because of the amount of games [we have coming].¨

Update Tuesday 23 September 2025

Palmer is facing a potential 3-6 week absence due to a new tear in his groin, which has been a recurring issue throughout the early part of the 2025/26 season. This setback occurred after he aggravated the injury during Chelsea's Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich last week and then played just 21 minutes in the Premier League loss to Manchester United on September 20, where he was substituted due to the problem. Palmer had only recently returned from an earlier groin layoff that caused him to miss games against West Ham and Fulham, but his brief appearances against Brentford and Bayern led to this flare-up.Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca addressed the situation in a press conference on September 22 ahead of the Carabao Cup match against Lincoln City, stating that Palmer is being managed "game by game" and is unlikely to feature in that tie. Maresca also downplayed the immediate need for surgery, saying the medical staff had not mentioned it and he "doesn't think" it's required at this stage, though Palmer will continue to be assessed daily. Update Friday 26 September 2025

🎙️| Enzo Maresca: ‘We have decided to protect Cole a little bit, in terms of his injury not getting worse. So we decided to rest him for the next two or three weeks, probably until after the international break, to see whether, with rest, he can recover 100 per cent and be completely fit.... 'It’s a matter of managing the pain in his groin. With the amount of games [we have played], it’s something that can happen, so that is the reason why we are trying to be conservative with him to give him rest. Hopefully, he can be 100 per cent fit after the international break.’ (Source: Chelsea)
